Coverack June 2023 Update

Watch this CS2000 Space!

In May, CS2000 funded an excellent activity with Matt from ‘One Blue Eye’ for the years 4, 5 and 6 children at Coverack school. Matt is a plastic recycler based in Helston, he takes plastic off the beaches (and anywhere else), melts it down and makes it into new things! He led a beach clean on Coverack beach with the children where he showed them some basic techniques to tell different plastics apart and how to find micro plastics in the sand. The children enthusiastically cleared a lot of rubbish off the beach, everything from single use plastic, fins off a board, fishing waste and much more.

The following week Matt came into school to run a workshop. He had them sorting the rubbish they had collected into different types. Then he showed them two very informative youtube videos on the damage plastic is doing to the environment and what we can do about it! After that, he demonstrated what he does with the plastic he gathers. He had buckets of clean, chipped-up plastics and a brilliant machine called an injection press. He used the press to melt down the plastic pellets and inject them into a mould to make key rings.

The Children left with a greater understanding of the history of plastic, some of the science involved, the problems and the solutions for plastic pollution, plus a key ring they had watched being made by Matt. All in all, a fantastic activity for the children to be involved in.

Matt’s shop is at the top of Horse and Jockey Lane, in Helston. He runs workshops from there as well as sells the items he makes! He has an active Face Book page and is a really interesting and inspiring man to talk to. Well worth popping in for a chat and a browse.

Thank you to everyone who has supported our events and volunteered, money raised by these events has helped to contribute to activities like these. It’s helped educate the children which, in turn, will help our planet be a clean, better place in the future.

CS2000 was set up to raise funds for additional space at Coverack School, and has continued to organize events in the village, promote Coverack and support our small village School. It also maintains the Coverack Village Cornwall website, Coverack Village Facebook and Instagram pages and provides a monthly update of What’s On in Coverack.
